  • : El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos)
Special loan from the Prado Museum, Madrid This masterpiece by the prominent painter El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos), who was active in Toledo in the early 17th century, is displayed here in celebration of 25 years of diplomatic relations between Spain and Israel. Christ's beloved disciple is depicted as a handsome young man at a fateful moment in his life, holding a cup of poisoned liquid from which a dragon symbolizing evil emerges. The medium-sized canvas presents him as an ordinary, flesh-and-blood person whose faith has the power to work miracles.
