Merce Cunningham

Dancing with Art

  • Date iconMay 13 2011 - June 22 2011
  • Curator(s): Timnah Seligman
  • Video
An homage to the great American dancer and choreographer Merce Cunningham (1919-2009), whose company will be performing at the Museum during the 2011 Israel Festival. Cunningham's groundbreaking work blurred traditional boundaries between artistic media, as this display featuring a work by Andy Warhol and another by Robert Rauschenberg - the company's stage designer for many years - demonstrates. Ocean, a final collaboration between Cunningham and video dance pioneer Charles Atlas, will also be screened. The film documents the Merce Cunningham Dance Company's 2008 performance in a Minnesota quarry of this renowned dance in the round, first staged in 1994 and subsequently presented at unusual venues worldwide. In collaboration with the Israel Festival and the Jerusalem Season of Culture
