Sometimes all it takes to begin a story is a pair of shoes: Cinderella’s glass slippers, the winged sandals of Hermes, or Dorothy’s ruby-red shoes. In stories and folktales from around the world, shoes grant heroes and heroines power, freedom, and protection. They are not merely items of clothing, but objects that propel the narrative and become an inseparable part of the magic.

The exhibition features a series of illustrations by artist and illustrator Merav Salomon, offering imaginative and contemporary interpretations of shoes from fairy tales and myths. Alongside the illustrations are special editions of these stories from the Illustration Library’s collection.
