Anthropoid Coffin with a Hieroglyphic Inscription

Special exhibit | At The Rockefeller Museum

  • Date iconSeptember 6 2020 - September 6 2020
  • Curator: Fawzi Ibrahim

Dozens of Egyptian anthropoid coffins have been discovered in local excavations, but the coffin exhibited here is the only one that bears an inscription. Excavated in Lachish in 1938 it is believed to date to 1300–1200 BCE. Alongside the coffin, an illustration reconstructs how it would have appeared when intact.
