Jewish Women's Dresses

From Ioannina, Greece

  • Date iconMay 22 2012 - December 31 2012
  • Curator(s): Efrat Assaf-Shapira, Daisy Raccah Djivre

These rare dresses, dated to the first half (?) of the 19th century, attest to the unique tradition of the Jewish community of Ioannina. Distinguished by its minimal absorption of the style brought by the Spanish exiles, it retained Byzantine characteristics intertwined with Ottoman, European, and Greek influences. These dresses, known to us for some 30 years, were passed down from generation to generation, and the Asseo family of Kibbutz Afiqim has now gifted them to the Museum.
