Fateful Choices: Art from the Gurlitt Trove

  • Date iconSeptember 24 2019 - January 25 2020
  • Curator: Shlomit Steinberg
  • Designer: Lisa Blechman

This exhibition presents some 100 works of art from the intriguing Schwabing Trove, a collection discovered in 2012 amassed by Dr. Hildebrand Gurlitt (1895-1956), who was a museum director, art dealer, and agent for the Third Reich. Fateful Choices explores this trove and showcases the diverse range of the works Gurlitt acquired throughout his professional career. Paintings, drawings, and prints by Manet, Monet, Renoir, Otto Dix, Oskar Kokoschka, Georg Grosz, and Max Beckmann are displayed alongside Dutch still life paintings from the 17th century, Rococo pastels from the 18th century, and 19th century portraits. The provenance research on the art trove is ongoing, and with it the search for the rightful owners of the works.

A collaboration with the Kunstmuseum in Bern, this exhibition supports these efforts and provides insite into the research already completed.
