An Enigmatic Dutch Painting
Special exhibit

  • Date iconJanuary 1 2018 - June 30 2018
  • Curator: Shlomit Steinberg
  • : Adam Camerarius

The European Art Department recently received a fascinating painting depicting a weeping woman, her clothing lavish and her hair loose. Is this the repenting Mary Magdalene or could this be the 4th-century BCE Queen Artemisia mourning the death of her husbandbrother? Adam Camerarius, the 17th-century Dutch painter who painted this work, was a student of Jacob Backer (whose name is signed on the painting) and was influenced by him as well as Rembrandt, to whose circle Backer belonged.
