The posture of Aphrodite in this statuette is based on the Hellenistic model created by the sculptor Doedalsas of Bithynia in Asia Minor in 250 BCE which became very popular in the Roman Period. In the original, the goddess was depicted bathing, crouched under a gush of water or splashing water on herself.
