The inexpensive figurines from Fayum in Egypt, for use in household shrines, were probably created for the foreign population by local Egyptian artists. The cult of Harpocrates was one of the popular mystery cults in Ptolemaic Egypt and Rome. Endowed with the magical powers of his mother Isis, Harpocrates personified the renewal of nature in Spring.
