ABOUT THE PRIZE

The Shpilman International Prize for Excellence in Photography at Israel Museum, Jerusalem

The Israel Museum, Jerusalem (IMJ) is proud to announce the creation of the Shpilman International Prize for Excellence in Photography, due to be awarded for the first time in 2010.

In recognition of photography as a leading contemporary cultural medium, this new prize is initiated by the Shpilman Family and the Shpilman Art and Culture Foundation together with the Israel Museum with the joint objectives of stimulating, encouraging and cultivating international research projects in photography and of broadening the range of photographic investigations which integrate theoretical issues with practical ones.

The Shpilman Prize is open all and free of prejudices of race, nationality, religion or gender. Potential candidates may include artists and scholars in photography with a proven and significant record of past achievements who intend to undertake a research project of consequence in the field. Entrants should have already accomplished a significant body of work and significant professional credentials. Candidates for the prize must be nominated by experienced professionals in art and/or photography affiliated with non-commercial artistic, cultural or academic institutions.

The prize in the amount of €30,000.- will be awarded once every two years based on the decision of an international jury, beginning in 2010.

The outcome of the project for which the Shpilman Prize will be awarded will result in a publication by the Israel Museum, and if suitable or applicable, an exhibition to be held in a venue which will be decided at the appropriate time.

The material to be submitted at the conclusion of the project should include photographs and a comprehensive theoretical text authored by the candidate outlining the issues that have been explored in the research. It is also possible to envisage a theoretical project; however in this case, candidates must adjoin to the theoretical text a significant number of supporting photographs and/or other relevant visual material.

The projects submitted will be reviewed and judged by an independent jury of internationally recognized experts. The winner will be selected based on the jury’s assessment of the applicant’s credentials and capability to accomplish the submitted project within the specific time frame as detailed in the regulations.
