Apollo, the leading magazine for fine and decorative arts, in People and Places
its December 2008 issue, featured our gold-glass medallions
among its top museum acquisitions for 2008 (reported in
the Summer–Fall 2007 Israel Museum Magazine).

December 2008
THE ISRAEL MUSEUM, JERUSALEM
Medallion from the Roman Catacombs, 4th century.
Gold-glass, diam. 10 cm.
Reacquired in 2008 through the generosity of Ingeborg
and Ira Leon Rennert, New York; The Legacy
Heritage Fund, New York; Dr Daniel Rosenberg, Lyon,
France, in memory of his wife, Jacqueline; and
anonymous Friends of the Israel Museum
This is one of the earliest known depictions of Jewish
symbols from the second Temple made outside
the land of Israel. Such medallions were used in
catacombs in Rome as tomb markers. Of the
hundreds that survive, fewer than 20 feature Jewish
symbols. It has been reacquired by the museum
after having been restituted to the heirs of the Dzialynska collection at Goluchow Castle in Poland.
