Alan and Riva Slifka, New York, have gifted us a truly unique collection of
122 Bezalel treasures, works of art and craft created in Jerusalem at
the Bezalel School between the years 1906 and 1929, ensuring
that the Museum holds in perpetuity the strongest such
treasury of Israel’s early heritage in the visual arts. Given our
mandate – to preserve the cultural heritage of our own
region, from ancient times to the present, and within the
broader context of world material culture – this gift has
enormous significance for us, allowing a new generation
to appreciate the legacy of Bezalel and enhancing
significantly our holdings in early Israeli art and Judaica.
The objets d’art – Jewish ceremonial items, vessels,
carpets, reliefs, and small wooden plaques – are made
in a wide variety of materials, including silver, brass,
ivory, wood, and terracotta, using many different
techniques, among them repoussé, filigree, engraving,
etching, and damascene work. Combining Eastern and
Western motifs and styles, they represent the revival of
art and craft work in the land of Israel and are infused with
the vision of Boris Schatz, Bezalel’s founder, who dreamt of
articulating a new visual language for the Zionist enterprise. The
Slifkas have concurrently made a commitment of $1 million toward
our Endowment Campaign in memory of Teddy Kollek and for the
continuing strengthening of our Judaica and Jewish Ethnography Wing.
