Gift of David Berg, New York, to American Friends of the Israel Museum, In memory of his mother Ida Berg
Accession number: B81.0966(a-b)
A pair of George III satinwood urn-shaped cutlery boxes.
Items such as these, were created by a specialist cabinet-maker who reproduced in miniature the fashion and artistry of the maker of larger pieces of furniture. For example the model for the feet is found on large chests of drawers, and the same tulipwood banding, chequer inlay and ebony and boxwood stringing is seen on full size pieces of furniture. The top of the urn rises on a wooden rod with a spring support, and reveals four tiers pierced with holes to accomodate pieces of cutlery.
