A Charles II silver tankard, London, 1669, maker's mark S.R. with cinquefoil below.
This superb Chinoiserie Tankard is one of the earliest recorded with this form of decoration, the surface being flat chased with sinuous trees and flowers with butterflies, and with Chinese figures. The inspiration for the design of this and similar pieces was taken from Chinese porcelain and lacquer.
