A set of four George III silver candlesticks by William Cafe, London 1767 and 1771, engraved with the crest of the Earl of Albemarle.
These elegant candlesticks in the neo-classical manner were made by William Cafe, who with his brother John, were the foremost goldsmiths producing candlesticks in the 18th century. It is not unusual to find different dates on pieces of this nature, probably some being in stock and others being made to complete an order. In this case the Earl of Albemarle was married in 1771, indicating that they formed part of his marriage plate.
