According to myth, the Satyr Marsyas was bound to a tree before being flayed alive, his punishment for challenging Apollo in a music contest. This surprising choice of subject reflects an interest in the exotic that began in the Hellenistic period, when a monumental statue depicting Marsyas bound was created. Publications: Merhav, Rivka et al., A Glimpse into the Past: The Joseph Ternbach Collection, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, 1981 Digital presentation of this object was made possible by: The Ridgefield Foundation, New York, in memory of Henry J. and Erna D.
