Three-sided base, probably from a grave monument
Athens, Greece
Late Classical period, late 4th century BCE
Marble
H: 102 cm
Gift of Ella Brummer, Durham, North Carolina, to American Friends of the Israel Museum, in memory of her husband Ernest Brummer
Accession number: 80.50.60

The base depicts a man leaning on a staff, identified as Hermon; a standing man, identified as Mnesilas son of [so-and-so]; and a woman, identified as Bito, mournfully resting her chin on her right hand and supporting her right elbow with her left. Their sorrowful attitudes suggest that the monument was a funerary one.
