Born in Poland, Sholem Asch (1880–1957) was a Yiddish poet and playwright of the shtetl. A first-rate chronicler of Jewish life in Europe and America, Asch gained international fame yet angered many Jews with his trilogy "The Man of Nazareth, The Apostle and Mary". In his last years, Asch settled in Israel.
