Jewish Women’s Dresses from Ioannina, Greece, First Half (?) of the 19th Century

May 22, 2012-December 31, 2012
Location: Caroline and Joseph Gruss Gallery for Costume and Jewelry
Curator: Efrat Assaf-Shapira
These rare dresses attest to the unique tradition of the Jewish community of Ioannina. Distinguished by its minimal absorption of the style brought by the Spanish exiles, it retained Byzantine characteristics intertwined with Ottoman, European, and Greek influences. These dresses, known to us for some 30 years, were passed down from generation to generation, and the Asseo family of Kibbutz Afiqim has now gifted them to the Museum
