Great Wide Open: New and Old in the Collection

December 19, 2012-April 2, 2013

Location: Ayala Zacks Abramov Pavilion for Israel Art

Curator: Amitai Mendelsohn

Media: Video art, photography, and painting

Desert landscapes and seascapes are at the heart of this exhibition. Associated with ancient myths, voyages, wandering, seclusion, and contemplation, the sea and the desert have been a source of fascination for innumerable artists since the Romantic era. Challenged by these infinite planes – suffused with majesty and sublimity – they created works that have much in common. Contemporary artworks, recently acquired by or gifted to the Museum, will be exhibited alongside a variety of works from the Museum’s collections, including video art, drawing, painting, sculpture, and photography from the 19th century to the present.
