Pharaoh in Canaan
Loan in honor of the Museum's RenewalJanuary 1, 2011-January 6, 2012
Location: Aaron and Blima Shickman Old Masters Galleries
Curator: Shlomit Steinberg
Four treasured items dating from the 16th to the 18th century – a deer’s pelvic bone decorated with scenes from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, a shell portraying mythological figures and sea monsters, a serpentine jug, and a canister made of agate plates – are on loan from a private collection in honor of the renewed Museum. These objects were originally assembled in a European scholar’s Wunderkammer. Here they are interspersed among the paintings and sculptures of the permanent European art exhibition and are on public view for the very first time.
