Location: Spertus Gallery
Curator: Yigal Zalmona
Photography expert Gérard Lévy assembled many years ago a rare and unique collection of over 300 vintage ethnographic photographs, taken between 1880 and 1910, documenting all aspects of Jewish life in North African countries. The Israel Museum was most fortunate to become the recipient of this important corpus, which is not only an invaluable addition to its photography and ethnography collections also became a major tool of historical research. Thematically related to Eden – East and West, the exhibition explored views of the East in ninetheenth-century art. This celebratory exhibition featured a large numbers of photographs as well as ethnic artifacts from the Museum's extensive collections, and provided a rare glimpse into a world and culture in the process of vanishing.
