Michal Helfman: Just Be Good to Me

April 27, 2007-June 24, 2007
Location: Billy Rose Pavilion
Artist: Michal Helfman
Curator: Amitai Mendelsohn
Media: Installation
Addressing the transition between childhood and adulthood, motherhood, and the representations of femininity, Michal Helfman explored the blurring of boundaries between inside and outside, between consciousness and the unconscious, and between law and order and wild, self-destructive abandon. The artist seemed to be inviting the viewer to an "initiation rite" marking the passage from a constrained existence to one that is free. In fact, however, the viewer was taken on a fragmented journey devoid of elevation, in which uncertainty and terror ultimately dominate security and innocence.
