The exhibition Mendel John Diness: A Photographer in Jerusalem (1854-1860) featured the only surviving negatives of photographs taken in the Holy Land in 1854-1860 by the first resident Jewish photographer in Jerusalem. In 1989, at a garage sale in St Paul, Minnesota, American photographer John Barnier discovered by chance a set of old glass plates which were eventually attributed to Diness. Mr. Barnier recognized their value and significance and offered them to the Israel Museum. Finally, after long deliberations and major fund-raising efforts, the collection was returned to their home at the Museum in Jerusalem.
