On loan to the Israel Museum from the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere, Vienna, Gustav Klimt's masterpiece, Judith I, reflects a novel approach to the heroine of the Book of Judith. Using as a model his Jewish patron (and probable lover), Adele Bloch-Bauer, Klimt deviated from the traditional narrative, creating a direct encounter with a flesh-and-blood femme fatale. This Judith, no longer savior but seducer, may be seen as an icon of turn-of-the-century Vienna.
