A Moabite Royal InscriptionMay 27, 2003-December 31, 2003
Location: Unspecified location
Curator: Michal Dayagi-Mendels
Found in Jordan, this basalt victory stele dating to the eighth century BCE originally belonged to a Moabite king. The inscription on the stele records the king's building projects and his defeat of the neighboring Ammonites. The events described are consistent with either the period just before Jeroboam II's accession to the throne or the brief period between his death and the campaign of Tiglath-Pileser III, after which the power of Israel began to wane.
