The plastic arts were often called to the service of the performing arts, and artists designed sumptuous, spectacular costumes for actors and dancers. Costume was a means of defining a character's identity, just as sets conveyed the context, helping the audience understand where and when the story was taking place. This exhibit featured sketches by such prominent artists as Leon Bakst, Georges Braque, Meir Axelrod, and others.
