The Jews of Alsace: Tradition and Emancipation in a Rural Community: The Jews of Alsace, one of Europe's oldest Ashkenazi communities, we3re the first to receive equal citizens' rights in 1791. They maintained their old ritual customs and traditions while becoming part of |French society. These traditions also characterize the community living in Israel.
