Who What

These two long sand-cases standing on four legs resemble the shape of two beds. Filled with sand, they are pierced with holes, all but one the size of the pupil of our eye. Their number corresponds to the number of orifices on the human body. There is a male and a female bed – perhaps a double bed. The "mouth" of the male is wide open, as if uttering the word "what?" The female's "lips" are pursed, as if kissing or uttering the word "who?" The gaping mouth reminds the artist of pictures of dying people, with the other openings evoking bullet holes and the earth suggesting a grave and burial; but the kiss, sexual organs, and round belly express love, emotion, vitality, and the power to continue.

Both of these human representations were merely created by sand flowing through holes to create shapes. The absence created the human figure; the emptiness created the whole and present.

שתי תיבות חול אורכיות ניצבות כל אחת על ארבע רגליים, שתי מיטות. מיטות חול. בתוך החול פתוחים נקבים, כולם חוץ מאחד בגודל אישון העין ומספרם כמספר הנקבים שבפני האדם ובגופו. במבט קרוב יותר – אלה גבר ואישה, ואלה הן מיטת גבר ומיטת אישה, ואולי זו מיטה זוגית. אצל הגבר אפשר להבחין בצלעות (הרי על-פי המקורות נבראה האישה מצלעו של אדם). נקב הפה שלו פעור כאילו השמיע את ההברה "מה" והוא מתקשר לתמונות של אבי האמן על ערש דווי שנחרתו בזיכרונו. הנקבים עשויים להזכיר גם סימני יריות והאדמה מחזקת את ההקשר של קבורה והטמנה, של מיטת מתים. אבל פיה של האישה מכווץ ונראה כשפתיים המטביעות נשיקה או כשאלה "מי?" הפה הפעור לנשיקה, סימני אברי-המין, הבטן העגולה של האישה, שדיה ופתח צוואר הרחם הפתוח בקוטר של שתי אצבעות – תחילת לידה - מבטאים את האהבה, את הרגש, את החיוניות ואת ההמשכיות של החיים. החיים והמוות ביד הפסל.

שני ייצוגי האדם האלה נוצרו רק מנקבים שדרכם ניגר החול כדי ליצור את הצורות. ההעדר יצר את היש, הריק יצר את השלם והנוכח.
