Library

In 1995, Ullman created Library, one of the most famous artworks made by an Israeli artist, on Bebelplatz square in the heart of Berlin. Concealed or buried underground, it is a memorial to the burning of books carried out by the Nazis in 1933. Ullman wished to express the spiritual silence that befell Nazi Germany from that night on, creating a kind of empty mass grave – a pit dug into the German soil and topped by a glass pane level with the ground.

Library was designed as a room with a closed door facing the university from which, ironically, came many of those who burned the books. Standing on the glass top, viewers look down, as if into a dangerous abyss, to face recent history. The room's dimensions – 706 x 706 x 530 cm – were determined by Ullman's own height. Fourteen empty shelves line the walls of the room (the Hebrew letters whose numeric value amounts to fourteen – yod dalet – compose the word yad, meaning "memorial"). They evoke in a palpable way the void created by the burning of the 20,000 books, all of which might have fitted on Library's vacant shelves.

בשנת 1995 העמיד מיכה אולמן את אחת מיצירות האמנות הידועות ביותר שיצר יוצר ישראלי: ה"ספרייה" החצובה-קבורה-נחבאת בכיכר בֶּבֶּל במרכז העיר ברלין. "ספרייה" היא אנדרטת זיכרון לציון ליל שרפת הספרים בידי הנאצים ב-1933. אולמן ביקש לבטא את הדממה הרוחנית שנפלה למן אותו לילה על גרמניה, וכדי לעשות זאת יצר מעין קבר אחים ריק - בור חפור באדמת ברלין עם חלון זכוכית קרוע בתקרתו שהיא רצפת הכיכר. "ספרייה" מעוצבת כחדר עם דלת סגורה לכיוון האוניברסיטה, שבאופן כה אירוני שורפי הספרים יצאו ממנה. הצופה בה ניצב על החלון ומתבונן כלפי מטה, אל ההיסטוריה הקרובה, כמי שמביט אל תוך מצולה מסוכנת. ממדי החדר נקבעו לפי מידת אורך גופו של האמן. ארבעה-עשר (י"ד בגימטרייה, שכן זהו "יד זיכרון") מדפי ספרים ריקים מתוחים לאורך הקירות. הם מסמלים את החלל הריק שנוצר לאחר שרפת עשרים אלף הספרים באותו לילה והם עשויים להכיל את כולם.
