Instructions that hang in public places and dictate appropriate behavior - Quiet; No smoking; Do not touch - address everybody equally. Although they are general, the directives are experienced personally, because they focus attention on one's behavior at a given moment. In his photograph, Down with Progress, Philip Rantzer appears dressed as a nurse in the type of sign that used to hang in public health clinics. With her finger on her lips, the nurse's figure personified the instruction to be quiet, softening the command and making it more personal. As a boy, Rantzer relates, he was never sure whether the nurse was asking for quiet or demanding it. His facial expression in the photograph is an attempt to rewind the years and reconstruct the ambiguous gesture he remembered from the nurse in the poster.
