Gal Weinstein

Gal Weinstein's book, Omanut La'am, is a detailed guide that includes materials, stages, and a technical demonstration of how he creates art. This artist's book appeared in a limited, individually signed edition. In many of his works, Weinstein employs techniques reminiscent of arts and crafts, demanding precision and infinite patience, and using materials that are not conventional in fine art. The book, which resembles a crafts or home maintenance manual, is a literal response to the question, "how do you do it?" The image of the instructor in the book (a generic, outlined figure, as is customary in manuals) is actually a selfportrait of the artist in his studio. Weinstein questions whether his work (or that of any artist) can be created according to a detailed set of instructions. The depiction of the stages of studio work gives us a glimpse 'behind the scenes' of artistic production, while clearly omitting the intellectual and emotional aspects of the creative process. Consequently, the book draws attention to the differences between art-making and artfabrication. Both entail advance planning and systematic working procedures; the artist, however, also relies on spontaneous expression that cannot be reduced to a formula in a how-to manual.
