Gil Marco Shani

The paintings of Gil Marco Shani are characterized by monochromatic backgrounds and lines of uniform width. His figures are described in general, expressionless outlines, much like the kind of illustrated 'everyman' of instruction manuals that displays no emotion or mood. The two workmen in Shani's work, The Wallpaper Hangers, are identical clones, as is common in such illustrations. The tension in the painting derives from the likelihood of physical contact between the two. In Lovers and Bus, Shani depicts a touching scene of lovers embracing before departure. The waiting bus marks time, leavening the tension of the farewell. The emotionally charged moment of intimacy is confined within restraining lines that cloak anatomy, and compel both the artist and the characters to curb body language and ardor.
