Albrecht Dürer

The exhibition focuses mainly on works by modern and contemporary artists, but it opens with an engraved Bible illustration by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). The engraving represents the story of Adam and Eve, the first in the Bible that deals with human behavior. It sets the pattern of the human relationship with divine authority: command, transgression, punishment. People act within a framework of divine commandments and instructions; violating them is a sign of human imperfection.

תחריט זה, אחד מאיוריו של אלברכט דירר לתנ''ך, מציג את אדם וחוה בגן-העדן. סיפורם - הראשון בתורה העוסק בהתנהגותם של בני-האדם - מכונן את דפוס יחסיו של האדם עם הסמכות האלוהית: יחסים של ציווי, הפרה וענישה - האדם חי במסגרת של צווים והוראות שהתווה האל, והיענותו להם אינה מובנת מאליה.
