Deganit Stern Schocken

Deganit Stern Schocken studied jewelry making after graduating from the Department of Environmental Design at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem. During the 1980s Stern Schocken produced a series of brooches in precious metals in which functional elements, such as the pin – normally hidden – become the focus of attention: ingenious mechanisms acting as ornament. Sometimes – as when strung together into necklaces – individual elements suggest the viewing of the body as a landscape. In another brooch series, surfaces are treated in such a way as to bear reference to urban landscapes observed from a bird’s eye view. Since the early 1990s, Stern Schocken has broadened her vocabulary to include new materials such as silk and paper, in which she explores the notion of the gemstone and the meaning of settings. With her series “How Many as One,” Stern Schocken comments on the industrial production technique of lost wax casting, creating an alternative decorative language through intentional manipulation of the rubber mold.

דגנית שטרן שוקן למדה תחילה במחלקה לעיצוב סביבתי ותעשייתי באקדמיה לאמנות ועיצוב "בצלאל" ואחר-כך למדה צורפות. בשנות ה-80 היא יצרה סדרות של סיכות מחומרים יקרים שבהן הציבה במרכז תשומת הלב את הרכיבים הפונקציונליים הנסתרים בדרך-כלל מן העין והעניקה להם מראית קישוטית. באחת הסדרות מרמזים פני השטח לנופים עירוניים הנראים מעין הציפור, ולעתים כשהיא למשל מחברת רכיבים למחרוזת, נראה הגוף האנושי כנוף. מאז שנות ה-90 הרחיבה שטרן שוקן את מעגל החומרים שלה, הכניסה אליו חומרים חדשים כגון משי ונייר וחקרה באמצעותם את רעיון ה'אבן יקרה'  וה'שיבוץ'. בסדרה "כמה הם אחד" היא מתייחסת לטכניקת הייצור התעשייתית של השעווה האבודה ועל ידי שינוי מכוון של תבנית הגומי יוצרת שפה קישוטית חלופית.
