Bianca Eshel-Gershuni Bianca Eshel-Gershuni was originally schooled in the fine arts. When she began making jewelry for herself, with no formal training in metal work, Eshel-Gershuni developed her own techniques for working in soft pure gold. Her work bears the markings of the intimate touch of her hands on the object. She works freely with both precious and common materials, including gold, plastic, feathers, pearls, aluminum foil, and shells, frequently using readymades and found objects. Eshel-Gershuni mixes personal stories with pagan, folklore, and Christian motifs that give a personal and primeval voice to memories of love, loss, war, and family, including those from her lifelong relationship with her mother. Some pieces approach kitsch or even fetish – the erotic flirtation between jewelry and the body is an important issue for Eshel-Gershuni. Moving fluidly between the intimate and detailed scale of jewelry to large sculptural pieces is a natural transition for her, and she views the two art forms as equals. Eshel-Gershuni’s introduction of a creative spirit to her field has made her a pioneer in Israeli jewelry. |
