Sharif Waked took his inspiration for this work from a depiction of a lion attacking a gazelle in an eighth-century mosaic floor at Hisham’s Palace (khirbet al-mafjar) in Jericho. Waked progressively filled out the figures of the animals to the point where gazelle and lion have become a single body, from which only the gazelle’s leg protrudes. The effect is similar to the images found in comics, where two characters engaged in frantic struggle are sometimes portrayed as merging into a single figure.
Although its title refers to the local conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, the work reaches out beyond this context to depict an unending universal struggle between weak and strong, innocent and cruel, good and evil.
