Like her exhibitions The Country (2002) and The Endless Solution (2004), the recent sculptures by Sigalit Landau seen here deal with premonitions of disaster on a huge scale and the end of human existence. The works were part of The Dining Hall, an exhibition she held in Berlin in 2007. Although fashioned from papier m?ch?, they look as if they have been carved out of raw flesh. One of them refers in its form to Constantin Brancusi’s Endless Column (1938), a groundbreaking three-dimensional exploration of the sublime, while the other resembles both a flower and a nuclear mushroom cloud. The possibility of transcendance and the beauty of the flower mingle here with bloody flesh and the threat of annihilation. |
