During the Jewish circumcision ceremony, the godfather sits on Elijah’s Chair to receive the baby; on its own, the chair symbolizes the hope for redemption, since the prophet Elijah is supposed to announce the coming of the messiah. This Elijah’s Chair is one of the most elaborate works ever produced by the Bezalel School.

כיסא אליהו זה, המיועד לסנדק בטקס ברית-המילה, הוא מן המפוארים שבעבודות "בצלאל". כשאינו משמש בטקס, הכיסא הריק מסמל את הציפייה לאליהו הנביא המבשר את בוא המשיח
