Rubin is one
of the most celebrated artists in the history of Israeli art. He is viewed
by many, here and abroad, as the definitive Israeli artist, whose works -
especially from the 1920s and 1930s - succeeded in capturing the spirit of
the Land of Israel, shaping it into a formidable artistic vision. Yet
Rubin's early works, produced between 1914 and 1923, mostly in his native
Romania, have so far been largely ignored. During this period he produced
works in a Symbolist-Expressionist idiom, patently different from those
made after his immigration to Palestine. These works - some of which are
now shown to the public for the first time - reveal the complex and
fascinating world of Rubin's early years.
