The Department
of Design and Architecture was founded in 1973 on the initiative and
vision of two men: Dr Willem Sandberg, an internationally acclaimed
graphic designer and former Director of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam;
and Max Palevsky, an entrepreneur and important collector of fine
art and design from Los Angeles. Since it's inception, the department
has displayed over one hundred and twenty exhibitions in the Sara
and Isadore Palevsky Pavilion, many of which traveled abroad to Japan,
the USA, and Europe. The permanent design collection serves as a rich
source for research and exhibitions.
The department strives to keep abreast with contemporary movements
in design and architecture, making a point to present them within
their social, economic, and cultural context. Focus is also placed
on the changing nature of the language and process of design, including
the latest industrial technologies and materials.
