Intensive
activity in the sphere of international contemporary art has characterized
the Museum almost since its inception. Exhibitions like the 400 flower
pots installed by Jean-Pierre Raynaud in the Museum's entrance plaza
(1971), or exhibitions by Boltanski (1973, 1982), Rauschenberg (1974),
have made the Museum part of the small family of museums which attempt
to deal with contemporary art, and offer an image of a young and innovative
museum which takes risks as well as being a home for established cultural
values.
During the 1980s a separate department forcontemporary art was created
and then a foundation which enabled artists from abroad to come to
Israel as artists-inresidence in order to create works to be
shown in the Museum was established. Dennis Oppenheim (1979), James
Turrell (1982), Mario Merz (1983), Jonathan Borofsky (1984), Kiki
Smith (1994) are among the artists who have exhibited at the Museum
in this context.
