Ludwig Yehuda Wolpert, Israeli Goldsmith and designer, born Germany, 1900-1981.

Ludwig Yehuda Wolpert was born in a small village near Heidelberg, Germany to a poor Religious Orthodox family. During his childhood he suffered from discrimination due to his family's Lithuanian origin and his cleft lip, as well. Following the presentation of the works in the 1930's exhibition "Kult und Form" (Ritual and form") at the Jewish Museum in Berlin, his work became well-known in the German Jewish world. His works show the great influence of Modern design, especially of the Bauhaus movement. Wolpert's works avoid decoration, using clean and geometric shapes.

In 1933, following the Nazi rise to power in Germany, he immigrated to the Land of Israel with his family. There, he worked in the "B. Friedland" Workshop where he designed and manufactured silver tableware and ritual articles. Together with Victor Solomon Reese, he produced the sculpture of the "The Flying Camel", and the symbol of the "Levant Fair", under the architect Arieh Elhanani.

In 1935 he began teaching at the "New Bezalel" in Jerusalem, where he headed the Department of Metal together with jeweler David Heinz Gumbel. Wolpert emphasized the use Hebrew typography in ritual objects designed in modern lines and with some industrial production. In addition to his teaching, he continued to create modern Judaica works at the school workshops. In 1942 he established an independent workshop in Jerusalem. In 1956 he immigrated to the United States, where he headed the "Toby Fasr Workshop, Modern Jewish Art" at the Jewish Museum in New York.
